Jewish Studies Requirements for All Beren Students (Stern College and Sy Syms School of Business)
- All students must successfully complete 36 credits (minimum of 18 courses) of Jewish Studies, as outlined below.
- All students must enroll in a minimum of 2 Jewish Studies courses per semester.
- Regardless of the number of Jewish Studies courses transferred from elsewhere, a minimum of 16 Jewish Studies credits must be taken on the Beren Campus.
Jewish Studies consist of the following 5 areas:
Bible
Hebrew
Jewish History
Jewish Philosophy
Judaic Studies
Distribution Requirements -must be taken on Beren Campus
Bible (Fundamentals) - 2 credit minimum
Hebrew 1-3 courses depending upon placement
Students are notified of their placement/requirements following the exam
Jewish History (Fundamentals) - 2 credit minimum
Jewish Philosophy (Fundamentals) - 2 credit minimum
Judaic Studies (Fundamentals) - 2 credit minimum
*Students enrolled in Sy Syms School of Business must also successfully complete 4 credits (=2 courses) in the Syms Jewish Values Curriculum (Jewish Business Ethics/Jewish Public Policy).
Transfer Credit
Students who receive a full year of 36 Israel credits for study in seminary/Israel may transfer a total of 27 credits to SCW/Syms.
Twelve (12) of these credits, equivalent to 6 courses, may count toward their Jewish Studies requirement. The remaining 15 credits count towards the 128 credits needed to graduate, but do not fulfill a Jewish Studies or a General Education requirement.
Students who receive less than a full year of credit for study in Israel, those who stay for shana bet, transfer students, and other special cases receive a prorated number of credits.
P/N Policy
• Students may take up to 2 Jewish Studies courses as P/N.
• Courses required for the distribution, including Hebrew, may not be taken as P/N.
