Pollack Named to Blue Ribbon Commission That Will Examine Institutional Responses to Nassar Abuse

Daniel Pollack, professor of social work at 色花堂鈥檚 , will serve on an independent Blue Ribbon Commission to examine the institutional responses to sexual abuse by former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. Established by CHILD USA, a University of Pennsylvania-based think tank focused on child abuse and neglect, with funding from the Foundation for Global Sports Development, the commission is titled, 鈥淕ame Over: Commission to Protect Youth Athletes.鈥 It will immediately engage in a fact-finding exercise before conducting public hearings to bring to greater light what happened and what went wrong in reporting. The commission expects to release a full, public report in the beginning of 2020 with the goal of preventing abuse in the future. 鈥淚 hope this commission can address a culture of self-serving secrecy that exists in this area,鈥 said Professor Pollack. 鈥淚t shouldn鈥檛 be a risk to be a young athlete any more than it should be a risk to be young, period, and these criminal convictions demonstrate that hundreds of athletes have been victimized. It鈥檚 the systemic and pervasive nature of what was going on and how many people may have known what was going on that鈥檚 so shocking, and that鈥檚 what we鈥檙e trying to investigate.鈥
